God knows why but the Nokia N95 8GB does not remove files from it's 'music player' database when the physical file is removed from the phone's memory. Not even after doing a full refresh of the database - it seems that it can only add files!! This behaviour results in loads of empty artist folders and is a fully fledged pain in the ass. Nokia don't seem to have acknowledged this in the user manual or on their support site but I have discovered that there is a way to fix this which is as follows:

  1. Mount the phone in 'Data transfer' mode.
  2. Look for the folder called 'private' in the root of the phone's memory e.g. /private
  3. Delete the following files:
  4. /private/101FFC31/mpxv1.mpd
  5. /private/101FFC31/pcv5.mpd
  6. /private/101f8857/Cache/*.* (leave the 'Cache' folder intact just delete the files/folders within it)
  7. /private/101ffca9/*.* (again leave the '101ffca9' folder intact just delete the files/folders within it)
  8. Unmount the phone.
  9. The phone should automatically suggest refreshing the music player database, accept this to rebuild your database.
  10. If the phone does not suggest a refresh of the database perform one manually in music player.

Your music player database should now references only to those files which are physically present on the device!

Hope this helps someone,
